President Buhari’s Meet With 36 Governors

Muhammadu Buhari has challenged state governors to pay more attention to the areas of security, health, education and agriculture so as to address the menace of poverty in the society.

NAN reports that the President gave the challenge when he inaugurated the 2019 to 2023 National Economic Council (NEC) and its maiden meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.NEC, which is established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), as amended, is chaired by the Vice-President.

Membership of the Council includes governors of the 36 states; the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Agriculture, FCT and the Minister of State, Petroleum.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning serves as Secretary to the Council.

President Buhari said: "I want you to pay special attention to the four major issues of security, education, health and agriculture in the coming years of this tenure.

"As you are no doubt aware, our successes in these four areas will go a long way in lifting our people out of poverty and secure our future for sustainable growth and development.''

According to him, if these four areas (security, education, health and agriculture) are actively implemented and closely monitored by NEC and the Governors' Forum, "we shall in the near future see a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.''

The president enjoined the States to find ways to increase internally generated revenues, improve VAT collection and increase agricultural output without disrupting business activities.

He also charged them to work with the Federal Agencies and the service providers in ensuring that broadband infrastructure is made available all over the country.

According to him, Information and Communication Technology is the future of work and "we must not allow ourselves to be left behind''.

President Buhari observed that the Federal Government in the last four years had demonstrated unwavering inclusiveness in dealing with every State, notwithstanding the political leaning of the Governor or the predominant party in power at the State level.

"I want this to be your model at the State level. No matter which party we belong to, let us shun divisive policies and join hands together for the upliftment of our people,'' he said.

He restated the high expectations on NEC as a veritable source of articulating policies and programmes that are expected to drive growth and development, secure the environment and take the country to the next level.

He also noted that the challenges confronting the nation in the next few years, especially in the areas of security, human capital development and employment for the youths are monumental and historic.

"But we are more than equal to the task,'' he added.

On Security, the president assured that the government would continue to rate security of lives and properties as top priority on its agenda.

He said government was firmly committed to securing the territorial integrity of the nation, while confronting the remnants of terrorists, bandits and other criminals across the country.

He further maintained that there must be collective and deliberate efforts by all to improve the security of lives and properties across the country, saying that "security is a bottom to top operation.

"Everybody must be involved for total success.''

On education, President Buhari stressed the need to take very seriously and enforce very rigorously the statutory provisions on free and compulsory basic education.

"Section 18(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended places on all of us here an obligation to eradicate illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education.

"Section 2 of the Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act provides that every Government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age.

"It is indeed a crime for any parent to keep his child out of school for this period.

"In my view, when a government fails to provide the schools, teachers and teaching materials necessary for basic education, it is actually aiding and abetting that crime.

"This is therefore a call to action. I would like to see every Governor rise from this meeting and rally his local Government Chairmen towards ensuring that our schools offer the right opportunities and provide the needed materials and teachers for basic education, at the minimum.

"If we are able to do this, the benefits will surely manifest themselves.

"Ensuring proper education during the first nine years of schooling means that our children start off their lives with some discipline and education. They will be safeguarded from roaming the streets, and protected from all the evil influences that assail idle hands and idle minds,'' he said.

President Buhari, therefore, urged the governors to make a firm commitment to be personally involved in ensuring that every child of school age actually goes to school throughout the crucial nine years of basic education.

He opined that, on its own part, the federal government would strive to extend the school feeding programme which will not only encourage school enrolment but also enhance the health and learning capabilities of pupils.

He said the government would also assist states as much as possible to access the counterpart funding provided by UBEC for the development of basic education.

The president, who also spoke extensively on the nation's healthcare system, identified lack of adequate funding as major obstacle to the realization of the nation's goals in the health sector.

He said: "As I already indicated, public healthcare is also a major sector of concern where States and Local Governments have crucial roles to play.

"Health is an area where the neglect of one person quickly amounts to the neglect of many.

"It is in our collective interest that each and every citizen gets at least a minimal access to healthcare, including primary, preventive and emergency care.

"Funding is again a major problem in this regard, so we must take more seriously the idea of universal health insurance and strive to make it work in our respective domains.

"We must also find ways of assisting the poorest and most vulnerable in our society, who cannot even afford to pay the premium.''

President Buhari said the governors must resolve to increase budgetary allocation to health and ensure prompt fund releases to keep the hospitals and primary healthcare centres in operation at all times.

According to him, the Federal Government is now implementing the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

"By this, we hope to achieve at least 65 percent increase in the share of the population covered by primary healthcare by 2023, up from the 12.6 percent we cover at the moment.

"Accordingly, it is imperative for us to do more on diversifying the economy, and this necessarily entails the sustenance and even acceleration of the agricultural revolution, which is already firmly rooted in some States.

"Of our nearly one million hectares of land, about 77% is confirmed suitable for agriculture.

"The potentials are therefore huge, both for the domestic and international markets. Mechanisation and agro-allied industry are very big areas still largely untapped and awaiting investment, both by government and the private sector,'' he added.

He, therefore, urged the governors to take agriculture most seriously as a very viable developmental enterprise.

While the federal government has primary responsibility for security and will not shy away from it, the president said the governors also have a critical role to play in ensuring security of lives and property across the country.

"You can definitely make a difference, not just by assisting the security agencies in your respective States, but also by keenly pursuing policies and programmes that forestall communal, tribal, religious and societal conflicts; policies and programs that promote education, information, dispute resolution, vocational training and youth employment,'' he said.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had earlier highlighted the role of NEC, describing it as "an important body that advises and sometimes implements economic and social policies that affects the livelihood of Nigerians''.

Osinbajo said Thursday's meeting would be focusing on the crucial issue of national security and the meeting's recommendations would be forwarded to the president for his possible consideration.

He announced that the meeting had 12 new members, which included the Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Imo, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Yobe and Zamfara States.

NEC, which is established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), as amended, is chaired by the Vice-President.

Membership of the Council includes governors of the 36 states; the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Agriculture, FCT and the Minister of State, Petroleum.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning serves as Secretary to the Council.

Thugs Beat Oshiomhole’s Younger Brother, Edo Lawmakers-Elect

THE crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly degenerated into a violent confrontation Tuesday evening as 15 Iawmakers-elect, including Mr. Seidu Oshiomhole (Etsako West 11), the younger brother of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were attacked by some suspected hoodlums.

Some of the lawmakers were said to have sustained serious injuries were rushed to the hospital for treatment where they are still recuperating at the time of filing this report.

The 15 lawmakers who are loyal to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole were not invited to the Monday night inauguration of the Assembly where 9 members met to elect Mr. Frank Okiye (Esan North East 1) as Speaker.

During the violent assault, the elected legislators who vowed to resist the emergence of Okiye, a Governor Godwin Obaseki loyalist, were severely beaten up by the goons who inflicted bodily harm on them.

According to an aide of one of the lawmakers who would not want his name in print, the attack which happened at a hotel in downtown Benin during a meeting by the lawmakers-elect saw both hotel staff and guests run for safety.

A close police source who was not authorised to speak on the issue said that a former deputy speaker, Mr. Victor Tiger Edoror led his colleagues to the police headquarters in Benin to make a report of the assault.
Some of Edoror's aides who accompanied him to the State Criminal Investigative Department were seen talking in low tone yesternight as he wrote a statement.

Efforts to reach the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. DanMallam Mohammed proved abortive as his mobile phone was engaged as of the time of filing this report.

How To Reactivate Banned Or Suspended WhatsApp Account

Few months ago, Facebook-owned instant messaging app - WhatsApp - in an official statement planned to temporarily ban users who uses the unofficial versions of Whatsapp.
Whatsapp feels you have done something wrong that violates their terms and conditions, thus this action. Not only that, you might have been suspended or banned for a different reason entirely which we will highlight here in this post, and as well how to reactivate your Whatsapp account if suspended or banned.
Some users are currently facing their suspensions on Whatsapp because they are using an unofficial version of Whatsapp (like the GBWhatsapp, OGWhatsapp, Whatsapp Plus etc). Suspension varies for different users. Some were given 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours suspension.
Reasons Why Your Whatsapp Account Was Suspended Or Banned

1. You have installed third-party applications. They are apps not created by WhatsApp developers. Apps like GbWhatsapp, Whatsapp Plus, OGWhatsapp etc.
2. You have sent too many messages to a person that does not have your number saved
3. Many WhatsApp users have blocked you in a short period of time.
4. You have created a group and added people that don't have your phone number saved as their contact.
5. Sending or forwarding the same message to many users could also lead to your Whatsapp account being banned or suspended. Because Whatsapp will see you as a spammer.
6. Sending hoaxes, rumors, submitting links with malware, posting adult content, unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, harassing, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive material could also lead to your account being suspended or banned.
7. Lastly, you should not violate any terms and conditions of WhatsApp services. The terms and conditions are listed on WhatsApp website, and make sure you go through each of them and understand each point carefully.

How To Reactivate Banned Or Suspended WhatsApp Account.

To reactivate your phone number and make it work again on Whatsapp is quite simple. First of all, you need to understand the "Rules & Regulations" that have been violated and be ready to correct it by making changes.

Uninstall all third-party or modded versions of Whatsapp applications on your phone. Delete groups and chats with users that haven't saved your number (or ask them to save your number as a contact on their phone).

With that being done, wait for WhatsApp to re-enable your phone number to use Whatsapp service.

If they don't activate your account, then send an email to support@whatsapp.com and politely ask them to reactivate your phone number to use Whatsapp.

How Long Should I Wait For Reactivation?

The time to restore your account varies. It should take nothing more than 48 hours to a maximum of "infinite". Usually, if the problem is not serious, this takes place after 48-72 hours maximum.

On the contrary, if your account was permanently banned because the violation is considered overly serious, the only option is to create a new WhatsApp account with a new phone number.

Herdsmen Raping Ebonyi Women, Desecrating Our Land – Governor Umahi

The governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi has accused herdsmen, especially those domicile at Afikpo North, Onicha and Izzi local government Areas of the state of assaulting and harassing women sexually.

Umahi made this known while addressing stakeholders of the state during a peace talk between herders and famers, at the Akanu-Ibiam International Conference Centre, Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State.

He lamented that the herders were defiling the land of Ebonyi by allegedly forcing the women into sex.

“There is a problem at Igboagu in Izzi LGA and Isu community in Onicha LGA. I want the chairman of the Miyeti Allah to know that we have a very strong traditional affinity to wives.

“Any Izzi woman, whether the man is from Izzi or outside Izzi and he have sex with the Izzi woman in this place, the land is desecrated and the woman as well is desecrated and cannot return to the husband’s house again and that is our culture.

“And the man that did it, is not allowed to stay in that land. It is the same thing in the entire Ebonyi state. So, where there is raping of women in their farms, is very dangerous.

“That land is cursed and cannot produce any crop again. And again, if that woman gives anything to the husband to eat, that man must die.

“I will like the chairman of the Miyeti Allah to help me to solve this problem of that Isu community where a woman was raped in her husband’s house. He must leave for the land to be cleansed. And the woman also must leave for the land to be cleansed.

“The land must be cleansed before both the herdsman and the woman be allowed to comeback to that place again. If both do not leave, people will start dying in their numbers.

“And of course, if the husband eats anything from the herder or the woman, the man will automatically die. That is the culture and the culture is something that is spiritual,” he stated.

Oyegun Reveals How Oshiomhole Is Killing APC With His “Agbero Style”

Chief John Odigie Oyegun, the immediate past national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that his successor, Adams Oshiomhole, lacks capacity to manage a political party.

He was reacting to the allegation by the South-South APC chairmen, that he laid landmines for the Oshiomhole-led national executive.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Public Affairs Adviser, Chief Ray Morphy, Oyegun described it as “ludicrous and infantile and an attempt to dream up justification for the failings of the party under Oshiomhole chairmanship”.

“That statement of Booby Traps is ludicrous and infantile and an attempt to dream up justification for the failings of the party under Oshiomhole Chairmanship,” he said.

Oyegun also stated that the crisis in states, arose out of sheer incapacity on Oshimhole’s part.

“He engages his mouth before engaging his mind, so he offends party members, so how does that constitute booby traps by Oyegun, the erstwhile chairman.

“Already, the Deputy National Chairman has confirmed that Oshiomhole runs the party without recourse to the NWC.

“He acts in direct opposite of decisions taken by NWC. No minutes of NWC meetings which in any event take place outside the party Secretariat.

“How would you not have crisis in states with the confusion that Oshiomhole created when he gave the states freedom to choose their methods of choosing candidates for elections. Much of the crisis in states arose out of sheer incapacity on the part of the current chairman, how does this Oshiomhole incapacity become booby traps by Oyegun.

“Many party men were aghast at the unfairness and injustice meted them during the primaries process.

“Only a bad carpenter quarrels with his tools. Indeed Oshiomhole is degrading and demarketing the party, rather than seek to bring more people on board, he is rather chasing people out of the party with his agbero style of engagement,” Oyegun added.

Implications Of Delay In Constituting Buhari’s Second-Term Cabinet

As President Muhammadu Buhari assumes office for his second term, MUDIAGA AFFE writes on the implications of undue delay in forwarding names of his ministerial nominees to the Senate for confirmation

After his inauguration as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29, 2015, it took almost six months for President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute his cabinet. The President thus disappointed many who had expected him to hit the ground running in view of the urgency in tackling insecurity as manifested by the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents in the North, the rising rate of kidnapping and armed robbery in the South as well as the economic woes resulting from lawlessness and corruption that preceded his assumption of office.

Buhari was criticised for taking so long to name his ministers at a time when the economy was severely hit by the fall in global oil prices, which ultimately contributed to the recession that hit the nation shortly after he took over the mantle of leadership.

The country was believed to be rudderless during the period the country operated without a Federal Executive Council in place.

When eventually the list was made public in September 2015, there was a public outcry as President Buhari was seen to have come up with people some saw as square pegs in round holes. After the inauguration of the cabinet, the country managed to survive the recession but since then, the economy has been wobbling and many Nigerians have been grappling with difficult living conditions.

In defence, the President had said the delay in the appointment of ministers was partly due to the manner in which he took over power from former President Goodluck Jonathan and the need to reorganise the government structures by his administration.

Although the economy may be technically out of recession now, several sectors have reportedly yet to show tangible signs of recovery. The rate of banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity has disturbingly increased across the country. There are concerns that any delay in constituting a new cabinet of competent men and women of integrity by the President as he settles down in office for his second tenure could spell doom for the nation.

A professor of political science and Dean of Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences at Chrisland University in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Femi Otubanjo, noted that the delay in appointing ministers in 2015 created negative feelings about the credibility of the Buhari administration in his first term.

While urging that such impression should be erased in his second term, Otubanjo said the President had no excuse not to immediately appoint ministers for his second term, having fully understood the enormity of the nation’s problems in the last four years and those who could handle different segments.

He said, “In this second term, there can be no excuse for him not to appoint his ministers and other cabinet members in good time. If he delays, it will give a wrong impression about his seriousness as a leader. He will also give the international community the signal that things are not likely to change because they are looking for new ways of doing things with the country through economic and security management.

“The international community will expect that our leader should be concerned about the development of the country and he needs to put in place people that will help him to manage the various sectors. So, if it is not done in good time, it will amount to un-seriousness, which will have repercussions in the way the international community will perceive us.

Otubanjo added that politically, Nigerians would not be happy that a President, who ought to know, having had time to see the country, could not quickly pick the right people that could speed the implementation of the solution process to the multifarious problems.

He said, “If you want to, for instance, build the Second Niger Bridge, the minister must be there to take the proposal to the Federal Executive Council for it to be approved for work to begin.

“So, if he is not there, it means that you either will not be able to do it or you give powers that do not belong to the civil servants to the permanent secretary to begin to initiate projects. In a nutshell, it will not be tidy if we do not have a cabinet in place in good time.”

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State, Chief John Okon, said the delay in appointing ministers contributed to the economic problem the country had to contend with in the first quarter of 2016.

He, nonetheless, believes that after working with some cabinet members in the last three and a half years, the President should have had a fair idea of how to avoid such mistakes in his second term.

Okon said, “One was that the non-existence of ministers showed a lot of instability and lack of focus of the administration because only permanent secretaries were working without direction from ministers.

“Again, even after the list was presented to the Senate for screening, a lot of Nigerians were not satisfied with it after such long wait. They wondered why it took so long when those on the list were known Nigerians, some of whom were his allies.”

He also noted that the length of time taken and the calibre of persons the President eventually presented gave a general feeling that it was not going to be a successful tenure.

“I would believe now that after working with his ministers and having identified some other persons and the impact on the economy and his administration, he should be able to assemble a team immediately after he had made proclamation to the National Assembly. He could do this two weeks after the proclamation,” he said.

Also, a former Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, Ayo Opadokun, said Buhari should have learnt his lessons in the delay in appointing ministers in 2015.

As a sitting President, who is continuing in office, Opadokun noted that Buhari should have used the state machinery to complete background checks on those he intended to appoint as ministers.

He said, “It was not the best that he failed to appoint his ministers on time in 2015. It was a negative outcome. But I think Mr President has learnt from that and he can quickly constitute his cabinet.

“He has, for example, worked with some people for about three and a half years. Those he felt competent could return; but for the new ones, he ought to have used the government machinery to do all the vetting so that he can hit the ground running from day one.

“So, if he is going to leave a legacy, he should work seriously in this second term for the restoration of Nigeria to the federal system of government.”

A legal practitioner, Chief Utum Eteng, said the President should immediately appoint his cabinet members in order to make the desired impact in the last lap of his administration.

He said, “When he came in his first term, he needed to properly study the terrain and be abreast with the system. He also needed to know more persons. But now, he has been there for four years and he has interacted with a cross-section of Nigerians and he knows better.

“So, he does not need to waste so much time in the appointment. He would have known more people now and he should know those he can work with and he would have had some political recommendations on technocrats who know what to do.

“I think the last delay (in his first term) affected so many things. He should immediately commence that since this is his last lap of his journey as president.”

A professor of Economics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Sherrifdeen Tella, said there would be no progress in governance if ministers were not appointed on time.

He said, “I do not think it will be wise to delay the appointment of ministers now. It happened the first time because maybe the election victory came as a surprise and when that happened, he (Buhari) did not know so many people.

“Now that he has known a lot of people, he should know those who performed well in his last cabinet and deserve to be reappointed. If he delays, there will be no progress in governance because the permanent secretaries cannot run the system as ministers would do. So, there should not be any excuse for delay.”

The Director-General, Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Muda Yusuf, said delaying the appointment of ministers would hamper the implementation of government policies.

He said the nomination of ministers should be seamless if Buhari was desirous of achieving progress in the second tenure of his administration.

Yusuf stated, “Delaying appointment of ministers has implication for the implementation of government policies because transiting from one regime to the other is like running a relay race. When you are running a relay, the faster you are able to hand over the baton, the better for the eventual outcome of the race. But if there is a brake in the handover, it distorts a whole lot of things. That same analogy will also fit into this. The earlier we have people to take over from where the immediate past cabinet stopped, the better for the economy and the continuity that this new dispensation is all about.

“If we want a seamless transition and implementation of government policy, the process for the nomination of minister should commence at the appropriate time. The earlier we have the list sent when the Ninth National Assembly is formed the better. It will also help to reduce uncertainty. If the list is sent as soon as the Assembly takes shape, in the next three to four weeks, confirmation should have been concluded.

Ibinabo Fiberesima Slams Shan George Over Troll Post Against Ned Nwoko

Ibinabo Fiberesima who earlier today supported Ned Nwoko's marriage to Regina Daniels, has also called out Shan George who slammed the lawmaker she described as shameless and disgusting.

Shan George in her post, had slammed the billionaire lawmaker who was recently sacked, adding that he was quite wicked to put the young actress in a traditional cult of ‘don’t ever cheat on me’. She however deleted the post. However Ibinabo Fiberesima who called her out in a post today, wrote in parts;

"I must say along the line I found most deplorable and downright disappointing the comment of my sister and friend Shan George. Though she deleted it (of course she forgot the Internet and it's complexities) I found her comment rude and frankly ill thought. A person of her stand who should know better going ahead on social media to call out Prince Ned as 'disgusting and shameless' for marrying a 'child' and even questioning what he's done for his people is vindictive and vile. This is the same Prince Ned Munir Nwoko who has been a humanitarian philanthropist per excellence, a father to so many and is a man who has given his life to helping complete strangers all over the country, done so much for his community and Nigeria at large and is still doing so much in every sphere. Shan dear. No. You no try. He deserves an apology from you."

See The 2020 Toyota Corrolla (Photos)

@naijadrivablog

Toyota Corolla is a well loved car world over. Even in Nigeria, you can not count 15 cars in a traffic without seeing at least one of any models of Toyota Corrolla. It has proven reputation for reliability, efficiency, affordability, and holds it’s value well.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is based on the Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), and there is a new optional engine – hybrid powertrain.

As with the new Corolla hatchback, what’s most commendable about the Corolla sedan is the vast, across-the-board improvement over its predecessor. It looks better, drives better, and feels better inside. Although, the sedan is more comfortable than the Corolla hatchback, which is sportier and has a shorter wheelbase.

The car’s wheelbase, which, at 106.3 inches, is the same as former model but The TNGA platform is new to the sedan. Toyota claims a “big increase in rigidity, and the rear suspension switches from its old torsion-beam arrangement to a new, more sophisticated multilink setup”.
While the Corolla’s ride-and-handling balance is more confident in feel than before, this newest model won’t trouble sportier compacts such as the Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, or Honda Civic.

Trims :
There are seven trims of this model: L, LE, Hybrid LE, SE CVT, SE, XLE and XSE.

L, LE, And XLE: It is still is the carryover base engine that’s standard on L, LE, and XLE models. This 1.8-liter inline-four is an ancient powertrain that has been featured in the past several generations of Corolla with minor upgrades. Its 139-hp is on the low end of the compact segment it doesnt perform better than the powerful 2.0L engine that gets better EPA fuel-economy ratings than the base engine.

SE (6MT): The six-speed stick, which even has standard rev-matching capability, comes only in the SE model and mates with the more powerful of the two engine options, a 169-hp 2.0-liter inline-four that’s standard in the sporty-ish SE and XSE trims and 1.8L, 139HP engine.

SE CVT: In the Sport Edition Continuous Variable Timing, a 2.0-liter motor is lashed to a continuously variable automatic transmission, which exacerbates noisiness at higher revs. The combination of the bigger 2.0-liter four and CVT and it takes 8.0-seconds to move from zero-to-60-mph but this is slower than much of the competitors.

Hybrid Model: is a new addition to the Corolla trims and it is a good compromise between the two engines. The hybrid powertrain uses a 121-hp Atkinson-cycle 1.8-liter inline-four and a pair of electric motors, with the drive motor generating 71-hp. This gives an impressive 52 mpg combined, nearly 20 mpg more than other petrol Corollas and right on top of its closest rival, the Honda Insight (which is, essentially, a rebranded Civic hybrid). However, the little disadvantage of choosing the Corolla hybrid, other than its $3000 price difference to the base model is that due to the placement of the battery pack under the rear seats, it has the same amount of trunk space as the conventionally powered model, and the rear seatbacks even fold flat, creating a pass-through from the trunk to the interior for longer cargo.
Press “EV mode” to get more throttle response on hybrid mode.

XSE Model: This comes standard with what Toyota lists as a sport suspension, paired with 225/40R-18 Yokohama AVID GT all-season tires. While its steering and chassis behavior are improved, they’re still nowhere near sharp enough to encourage aggressive driving – skidding etc.

Fuel Efficiency: the XSE average fuel economy over 900 miles amounted to 28 mpg. Toyota claims that the average mpg for this model is 31 city/38 highway (estimated).

Interior: Rear-seat space is one of the few areas where the new car doesn’t at least beat the old one. Rear legroom drops by more than six inches (the old Corolla had a positively more amount of space in back), so it’s not quite as Uber-friendly, but the rear quarters are still more spacious than in the Corolla hatchback model. Interior materials are average for this class of sedan— cheap plastic interior materials are kept to a minimum, and the dashboard layout is attractive — the infotainment setup is easy to use, with volume and tuning knobs and standard Apple CarPlay capability. (Android Auto is not available).

Pricing: The starting price of this model (excluding shipping and customs duty) is $19500 (NGN7,039,500, exchanged at 361/$1) of L trim. The LE trim costs $19950, Hybrid LE trim costs $22,950, SE CVT trim costs $21,950, SE manual drive (6MT) costs $22650, XLE trim costs $23,950 and the top-of-range trim, XSE costs a whopping$25,450 (N9,187,450).

Safety Features: The 2020 Corolla comes with 8 standard airbags, pre collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, steering assist, road edge detection, blind spot monitor, remote control (you can use to locate your car if you forgot where you parked), automatic highbeams, full speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist.

Colours: There are 8 colours to choose from viz: Celeste, silver metallic, Black sand pearl, Barcelona red metallic, super white, blizzard pearl, blueprint, blue crush metallic
The Corolla sedan remains a compact Car that this model significantly better than the last few generations of Corollas.

While Toyota succeeded in removing most of the reasons not to buy a Corolla by making the 2020 model more pleasant to drive, they still maintained all the signature design that already made it good choice.

what do you think?

Speakership: I’ll Never Step Down For Gbajabiamila, Says Hon Olatubosun

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Olajide Olatubosun (APC-Oyo), has again vowed that nothing will make him step down for the leading contender for the House and anointed candidate of APC, Hon. FemiGbajabiamila.

Although his party has publicly endorsed Gbajabiamila, a Lagos lawmaker, for the position, Olatubosun vowed not to step down from the race.

Briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday, he said that he would fight against imposition with the last drop of his blood.

The APC has zoned the office of the Speaker to the South-west and endorsed Gbajabiamila for the office.

Olatubosun said that section 50 sub-section 1b of the 1999 Constitution as amended states that members shall elect from among themselves any member with legislative experience to become speaker.

He said the APC’s endorsement of Gbajabiamila was illegal.

“I’m a party man only to the extent that the decisions of the party conform with the constitution,” he said.

He said that the doctrine of separation of power states that there are three arms of government with separate functions and responsibilities.

The lawmaker explained that the different arms of government should cooperate with one another without compromising the principle of checks and balances.

“The executive is not superior to the legislature, no. Unfortunately, because of our long years of military rule, the legislative arm has been bastardised so much.

Why NECO Scrapped Use Of Scratch Cards In Examination

The National Examination Council (NECO) over the weekend scrapped the use of Scratch cards in is examination with the procurement of 8,000 biometric capturing machines worth N500 million.

Speaking in an interview with Journalists at NECO headquarter in Minna at the weekend, the Chairman of Governing Council Abubakar Sadiq said the scratched cards were eliminated because it became a source of financial leakage in NECO and also racketeering. He explained that the racketeers are hoarding cards and students find it difficult to get the cards.

“So we removed scratch card and now with biometric machines people can use their handset to register for the examination and whatever is realized goes straight into our Treasury Single Account (TSA) account, so it will also boast transparency.” He said they want to pass out the benefit of the reduction which the president has made to their own students otherwise they will be cheated.

According to him, the machines will capture every data from every student and school so on examination day, “our monitors will go to schools so all those who have registered will go through a process by placing their finger on the machine to ascertain if they are the candidate registered or not, with this it will be impossible for anyone to impersonate anyone.”

“We are sure this will deal with impersonation and any school or examination centre that refuses to use the machines will be cancelled,” he said.

He also said students will be given numbers at the point of registration to use to access their result.

Also speaking, the Acting Registrar, Abubakar Gana, said the biometric verification machines and the 20 Toyota Hilux vans were procured to tackle impersonation and ease movement of examination materials.

Presidency, APC Plotting To Intimidate, Annex Judiciary – PDP

Temidayo Akinsuy, Samuel Ogidan

Lagos / Abuja – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday accused the presidency of casting aspersions on the integrity of the justices of the Supreme Court over the court’s widely accepted judgment on Rivers and Zamfara states elections.

The PDP’s accusation came in reaction to the statement by Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), calling for a review of the apex court’s verdict.

The party stated that Prof. Sagay’s resort to incitement and hate language against the Supreme Court justices further exposed the desperation of the Buhari presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cow, blackmail, intimidate and attempt to annex the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, ahead of the determination of PDP’s presidential election petition, now before the Court of Appeal.

PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, noted that Prof. Sagay’s comment had also revealed the level of condescension, derision, and contempt the Buhari presidency and the APC have for the justices of the Supreme Court.

Part of the statement reads: “By declaring the upholding of justice by the Supreme Court as a ‘national tragedy’ and ‘unimaginable injustice’, and suggesting that, ‘we (probably, his party members) should not allow’ the judgment as delivered, Prof. Sagay is calling for anarchy and rebelliousness against our constitutional democratic order and rule of law.

“Our party believes that such intentional attack on the integrity of the Supreme Court can only emanate from feverish apprehensions by the Buhari presidency and the APC that they might not have their way in the presidential election petition, hence this resort to blackmail.

“As a law-abiding party, the PDP holds the integrity of the justices as well as the institution of the judiciary very high and do not support this attempt by agents of the APC to clip and sequester the judiciary for their partisan interests.”

The PDP also insisted that there was no way Prof. Sagay, a professor of Law, could justify his call for the rejection of the Supreme Court’s judgment on Zamfara and Rivers states as the judgments were in protection of the rule of law, democratic ethos, as well as the wishes and aspirations of the people over the attempt by the APC to take control of their states through manipulations and award of fictitious votes to their candidates.

The PDP, therefore, called on the Supreme Court justices to note the machinations of the APC and continue to be firm in upholding justice as had been demonstrated in the judgments on Rivers and Zamfara states elections, which would serve as lessons to political parties to adhere strictly to rules of internal democracy in the electoral processes.

In a related reaction, the PDP Lagos State chapter charged the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the courts to withdraw all privileges enjoyed as Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by Prof. Itse Sagay.

In a statement by Taofik Gani, its Publicity Secretary, the party also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately replace Sagay as head of the advisory body and replace him with a competent Nigerian.

“Security agencies must now arrest, interrogate, and expectedly prosecute Sagay for his inciting comments capable of provoking civil unrests in the country at large,” he said.

He added: “The reaction of the Lagos PDP is on the heels of the recent pronouncements by Professor Sagay against the Supreme Court judgments on Rivers and Zamfara states which gave eventual victories to the PDP after declaring that all votes cast for the APC were wasted votes.

“Professor Sagay had described the said judgment as travesty of justice whilst he also urged the APC to insist on their “mandate” by approaching the Supreme Court for a review of the Zamfara state judgment.

“Prof. Sagay has exposed his hatred for the PDP when he described the Supreme Court judgment by positing that ‘in the next four years, Zamfara State will be governed by a party and politicians rejected by the electorates’.

“To the PDP, these words and stance are inciting and unbecoming of a senior lawyer and must be taken seriously as professional misconduct within the contemplation of S.24(1) a&b of the rules of professional misconduct.

“To us as a party in Lagos State and from where most of these false activists speak, Professor Sagay is no more a fit and proper personality to head a Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption.

“He has now showed enough obvious partisanship and support for the APC. One need not wonder why all APC chieftains are saints before the Sagay led PACAC. With Sagay as adviser, the advised is at his own risk.

“It is very laughable that Sagay attempts to be appellate court to the Supreme Court. It is, however, indeed unethical for a lawyer who did not appear in a matter to be seized of the evidence adduced to now berate decisions of such courts. This is exactly what Prof Sagay has done.

“To hit hard on the Supreme Court justices, he chose to play sycophantic and patronising roles by rudely describing the Supreme Court judgment as travesty of justice.

“This is capable of causing hatred for the justices. We thus expect that the Supreme Court should consider the Sagay statements as inciting and contemptuous.

“For us in Lagos PDP, we shall no longer tolerate unjustifiable attacks on our image and interests by persons who disguise as fair speakers but actually APC apologists.”

However, in his response, Sagay told Daily Independent that he was shocked at PDP’s outbursts, saying the party’s reaction showed that it had really gone down.

He said all he did was to do a critique of the Supreme Court’s judgment, adding that he was surprised the PDP could call for his arrest and removal as a SAN.

“I am extremely shocked at the PDP’s call for my arrest and removal as a Senior Advocate. I have known the PDP for its incorrigible love of fraud, indiscipline and total lack of principles which they themselves have admitted by apologising to Nigerians.

“Obviously, they are not sincere. So, I am not surprised that they were not embarrassed at the idea of collecting political offices in a state after an election in which they suffered a crushing defeat.

“In other words, they have no shame in collecting another person’s property. My disappointment is that they have descended into a new low by calling for the arrest of someone who has simply done a critique of the judgment in which they were awarded unearned offices.

“What have I said that is illegal for me to be arrested? They must be in a very bad situation for them to react like this. That is incredible. A whole PDP calling for my arrest because of a legal argument that I presented?

“Rather than respond to the argument or counter me, instead they want me to be arrested. Who is going to arrest me? It gives a very bad impression about them. They’ve really gone down and they are so low,” he said.

How Buhari’s Slow Decision Process May Upset Economy

Analysts urge speedy formation of cabinet

By Chijioke Nelson,

President Muhammadu Buhari’s slow decision-making process could once again impede his second term in office and endanger the economy.
One week after signing the N8.92 trillion 2019 budget and five days after the new administration was inaugurated, Buhari’s “body language,” according to a source close to the presidency, seems out of tune with the urgent need to set up a cabinet, reset the ailing economy and properly deploy the budget’s borrowed funds.

“Baba’s way is taking things gradually. But I don’t think it would take long like before. There is a need to prove a point this time around, coupled with the criticisms against him and the condition of the economy. For now, it’s not clear whether he will speak on it this week,” the source said.

What has thrown into sharp relief the slowness of Buhari is that South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, named his cabinet 96 hours after he was sworn in, becoming also the third president on the continent to have a gender-balanced cabinet, after Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Affirming the connection between cabinet inauguration and the financial market, the South African rand reacted positively, appreciating by 0.5 per cent.In 2015, investors and financial market players, both foreign and domestic, waited six months before Buhari picked his cabinet. The development signalled a lack of direction and fuelled speculations. It also led to uncertainty, near-inactivity, cautious investments and huge withdrawal of investments, besides institutional sanctions.

According to the chief executive officer of Cowry Asset Management Limited, Johnson Chukwu, “It was more of a dark moment, as there was no fiscal policy direction to boost activities. The development caused investment reversals, while potential inflows were kept on the sidelines against perceived uncertainties. The hiatus, in an already high-speed growing economy, was a key reason behind the high-level economic headwinds that culminated in recession. We cannot afford it this time.”

Currently, the economy is hostage to external shocks, even as the latest report on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shows a reverse from major gains in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2018. It went down from 2.39 per cent to 2.01 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2019, representing a decline by 0.38 per cent.

But a financial analyst, Egie Akpata, was skeptical on what the president’s package could unfold. He told The Guardian that the economy might not witness any great change, as Buhari might return many of his “underperforming” ministers. He nevertheless expressed hope that the 2015 delay would not repeat itself, even as he called for urgent attention to bring the economy out of its “bad shape.”

FXTM research analyst, Lukman Otunuga, noted that the key question on the minds of many investors is what his re-election means for the economy in 2019 and beyond, with emphasis on shifting the economy from reliance on oil, rather than mere proclamations.

“The market is still afraid his victory suggests continuity of policies. On the other hand, it offers the government an opportunity to build on what has already been achieved over the last four years. If infrastructural developments are worked upon and there is real diversification, especially in agriculture, coupled with strategies to mitigate external risks, Nigeria could still surprise the world this year,” Otunuga said.

On his part, economist, Bismarck Rewane, said: “We need investments to move on. Of course, there are signs. But what we need more, now, not the signs, but tangibles. In the near term, everything will continue this way, unless something different happens.”

Financial analyst, Ayodele Akinwunmi, said the president has learned from the past. He was therefore optimistic that he would constitute his cabinet on time with a team to drive his economic growth agenda. He warned: “Any delay like what we had in 2015 may put the economy on reverse gear from its current momentum. I am sure the president will not like such. I believe Nigeria will have a cabinet before the end of June. Expectations for the second term are high and there is a lot of work to be done.”

Also, economist, Dr. Olalekan Obademi, said he would not expect the president to repeat the late appointment of cabinet ministers. According to him, “The effect is that the uncertainty could lead to capital flight and create other distortions in the economy.”

Apple Has Deleted Its Facebook And Instagram Pages For ITunes

A lot of signals is shown, looking more and more likely that iTunes’ days are numbered.

Topmag noticed that Apple has cleared out its Instagram and Facebook pages for the program, removing all of its pictures, posts, and videos.

We note that Apple appears to have migrated its iTunes accounts over to their Apple TV counterparts on Facebook and Instagram. Its Twitter account remains untouched for now.

The writing has been on the wall for the end of iTunes for a little while now.

The April Reports suggested that Apple was planning to break it up in favor of separate apps for Music, Podcasts, and TV with the next version of macOS, although it’s reported that the Music app will pretty much have the same functionality.

It was Last week that the leaked screenshots showed off what looked to be the Apple Music and Apple TV apps, and a roundup of Apple’s plans for next week by Bloomberg indicated that Apple is indeed axing the program, in favor of those separate applications.

We’ll find out tomorrow when Apple kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference. In addition to finding out iTunes’ fate, we’ll likely also get news of a new Mac Pro, iOS 13, and more.

Four Years After, Ex-Nigerian Minister Set To Return Home From Exile

Nigeria’s erstwhile Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, has signalled his intention to return to the country four years after proceeding abroad on self-exile.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, the former minister dismissed suggestions that he was evading prosecution by the Nigerian authorities.

Mr Adoke said he was getting ready to return between July and September, after four years outside the country on self-imposed exile.

“I am ready to submit myself to prosecution. I am not ready to submit myself to persecution,” he said, as he justified his prolonged stay outside the country.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said some appointees of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, including Mr Adoke, have questions to answer concerning  the infamous $1.1billion Malabu Oil scandal for which oil giants Shell and ENI are being prosecuted in multiple jurisdictions.

But the former attorney general has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and a Nigerian court ruled in April 2018 that he cannot be held personally liable for his role in the controversial deal.

In the judgement, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court agreed with Mr Adoke’s submissions that his involvement in the transaction, which resulted in the sale of Nigeria’s oil well, OPL 245, was in compliance with his constitutional duties as attorney general.

In his interview with this medium, the former minister said his stay abroad has little to do with the Malabu matter.

He said he initially left the country for further studies but that as he was planning to return after his academic programme, he received counsel from some influential well-wishers that there was a plot to unjustly incarcerate him and that he should stay away from harm’s way.

“I would not put myself before a moving train,” he said. “… I needed to be heard because the modus operandi of those investigating was working to an answer, not investigative.”

Mr Adoke said he also needed time to attend to his health while also documenting the story of his stewardship.

The former minister, who left Nigeria in June 2015, first headed to The Hague, where he undertook advanced studies in international criminal law, graduating in August 2016.

“I worked on some very credible intelligence at that time from people from within and outside the government. I was advised not to come back at that time,” he told this newspaper.

“So, I had the option to go on for my PhD. I had even submitted my proposal for the PhD. At the same time, allegations were being made against me, which I needed to clear. At the end I opted for writing about my experience.”

Mr Adoke said he has just completed his memoir titled “Burden of Service”, which is due for release in July.

He described the book as a tell-all narrative which documented his five-year tenure as attorney general of the federation, and some key political and administrative moments of the country during the period of his stewardship.

Mr Adoke said many people accused of infractions were not being accorded fair hearing during investigation, hence his decision to first tell his own story.

The book’s title, he said, underlines the burden that comes with public office in Nigeria “because it is really a burden to serve Nigeria as a country that is ungrateful to those who have served it”.

Mr Adoke lamented that his job as attorney general was a tough and difficult one, with many expectations and difficult decisions to contend with.

“From my experience, if people can’t eat, it is the attorney general,” he said. “If people don’t get appointment, it is the attorney general. If people didn’t get this, it is the attorney general. So, it is a very difficult job and people who have passed through that office would tell you that it is very difficult.”

Mr Adoke however commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for giving him free hands to operate as the country’s number one law officer.

“But I was very lucky, I had a very understanding president. I had a president who allowed me to do my work. I had a president who has a listening ear.

“I had a president who understood the fact that he was a constitutional president and must work within the confines of the law.

“On issues of the law he deferred to me. If you tell the president something is illegal he would not go ahead and do it, no matter the prejudices or his preferences.”
